Are you interested in learning how to meditate? Are you having trouble finding a meditative state? Unsure what meditation really is?

Well if you have any of those questions you have come to the right place. I have had all of these questions come up multiple times throughout my journey in meditation. But I have found some tips on how to get into a meditative state and how to get the most out of it.

First of all, what does it mean to meditate? Well the definition states "think deeply or focus one's mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation." Although this definition is correct, I believe that the physical acts of meditation can be more flexible and include walking, yoga, sitting, laying down, etc. This can be useful for people newer to meditating because it gives more variety in figuring out what works best for you to relax.

So find a quiet space, free of distractions and get into a comfortable position.

Now I want to share with you my personal method of meditation that helped me entirely when beginning. I like to incorporate meditation with focused imagination.

When practicing the imagination part, do not move on to the next 'step' until you have fully imagined everything I tell you. If your mind wanders, bring it back to what I am telling you. Once you imagine it, move onto the next 'step'

Close your eyes and take about ten deep breaths. Be sure to inhale and inflate your belly and exhale while deflating your belly.

Picture yourself. Do you see you? All of your details. Your hair, eyes, body, skin, clothing. Really create an image of your being in your mind.

See an aura of white light surrounding your being. This is your protection. When you are surrounded by the white light, nothing negative, no fears, no worries, can come in your way. Radiate this white light from your heart. Feel it pulsing out of you.

Now find a bridge. This can be a bridge you have been to before, it can be one from your memory, or create a bridge of your own. But be sure to find it and bring it into your awareness.

Bring yourself and your light into the same scene as the bridge. When you and your light are there, you can now walk onto the bridge. Take your time.

Look over the edge of the bridge, do you see the river? The river is flowing fast and away from you.

Now let go. Let go of all of the negativity that holds you back. Let go of anger, jealousy, procrastination, depression, anxiety, fear, heart ache, attachments. What ever comes to mind, just drop it into the river. See those words float away from you.

They are gone. You feel lighter. You feel blissful.

This is when you can walk to other side of the bridge.

Walk into the most beautiful and serene field of flowers you have ever seen before. See your being still surrounded by white light sitting in this field.

Now you can just be here. If any thoughts come into your mind, that is ok. Let them pass through but do not entertain them. Be in the stillness of your mind and the ease of your heart.

This is meditation.

This can take you some time if done correctly. The point of the imagination is to ease your way into the stillness of meditation. Seeing each scene clearly will make the meditation much more fulfilling.

Love this! Meditation is something I try to practice daily and the differences it makes in my life are crazy. Something I like to do when practising mindfulness meditation is imagine that I am like a mountain, stern and unmoving, and my thoughts are the clouds passing by. Acknowledge the thoughts, but don’t judge them, just let them pass. Great article :)
